Everybody probably knows this, but Gary’s first wife, not mentioned in the obituary, was Sue Haury, who we’ve been remembering of late. They were married less than a year when she died, and beautifully in love.
I was having a Senior Moment. I stumbled across a wedding picture of Sue and Gary on a family genealogy page (related to her), and the caption said they got married in Arkansas. I was definitely not there, but they did look beautifully in love. My apologies.
My lasting memories of Sue were of her radiance and her exuberance; the latter is demonstrated by this story (though I may have some details wrong—jeez, how did I get so old?). As seniors, we shared Chemistry class with Mr. Reed, just before lunch. It was sometimes hard to sit through, so now and then Sue would ask Mr. Reed if she could go to the cafeteria, as her blood sugar was probably low, causing her to feel dizzy. And oh, could she take a friend in case she felt even more shaky on the way (lucky me)? The cafeteria ladies welcomed us to the most luxurious spread: more of those puffy rolls, homemade lemon meringue pie, icy cartons of milk and lemonade... We had first pick, beat the crowds, and enjoyed our deceitfully gotten treats.
I also remember going to her wedding and thinking that she and Gary looked as if each had found just the right person—but I don’t entirely trust the memory. Does anyone else remember going?
Words are inadequate, and yet they’re all we have to express emotions in times like these. I’m so grateful for the words in Carolyn’s obituary; someone I remember as quiet and shy in high school went on to experience and accomplish so much! And now, when some of the pain passes, her family will enjoy so many memories, told in words that will keep her alive in their hearts. I am so sorry for your loss.
Pat was talented and unafraid to perform in drama productions; I remember him in drag in “Charlie’s Aunt.” I don’t think he ever went too far from home, and I believe he had a long career as the head of the drama department at Palomar College. His good friends will miss him.
